'Les Tourelles' Saint Christoly de Medoc, France
As seen in Cote Ouest France, Harpers Bazaar, Elle Decor UK, Vogue Living and Real Living Australia.
Defined by both its sense of history, alluring proportions and nestled in the peaceful port village of Saint Christoly de Medoc, this beautiful petit chateau is captivating in every way.
'Les Tourelles', was first built by a doctor & his family in 1836. The home was then bought by a winemaking family who owned it for the next few generations until it was purchased in 2016 by Heidi Middleton who extensively renovated, redesigned and decorated it to bring it back to life.
It's conveniently located on the Atlantic Coast of France, 1h 15 drive from the centre of Bordeaux & its international airport, with a new 2 hour fast train from Bordeaux to Paris. The nearest beach is 15 minutes away, 3 hours drive to Biarritz, 3.5 hours to San Sebastian in Spain and in winter you can be skiing in 2 hours to the west. Medoc is also home to some of the worlds most famous wineries such as Chateau Margaux, Chateau Lafitte Rothchild, Saint-Estèphe, Saint-Julien & Moulis which are all a short drive away.
This two-storey residence is filled with character, charm, original architectural features & impressive 3.5 metre ceiling height throughout. It is set on 3 hectares and includes a fruit orchard, a small vineyard, a dairy & a barn which are attached to the main house.
The 'Salle a Manger' & main living area is home to a large sandstone fireplace that was rebuilt in 2016 to mirror its original heritage design. This room flows through two stone arches to a large kitchen complemented by a new 'Lacanche' oven & stove. There is a walk in pantry & laundry that is accessed from the kitchen through two more stone arched doorways.
The ground floor has a large salon/sitting room with an adjoining turret (potential library) & this salon sits opposite a TV room or 5th bedroom. This room also has a toilet & wash basin in an adjoining round turret.
The second floor of the home that is accessed through the original wooden staircase, houses 4 bedrooms & a bathroom. Two of these rooms are of a very large scale & could both be master bedrooms. They open with original French doors to a stone balcony which overlooks the village. The other 2 bedrooms face the garden, orchard & swimming pool.
The entrance to the home is through original iron gates & stone pillars to a pebbled courtyard. Al fresco dining is enjoyed between two 200 year old chestnut trees throughout the warmer seasons. A 13 metre heated swimming pool sits in the back lawn which extends out to the orchard and gardens.
4 double bedrooms, modern cook's kitchen with 'Lacanche' oven & stove, 1 main bathroom, 2 wash rooms off the bedrooms, 2 large living areas, home office/bedroom, walk in pantry, laundry/WC, drying room, small orchard (apple, fig, cherry & plum trees) & vineyard with verandahs on both floors.
A small fruit orchard and vineyard sit alongside the heated swimming pool and lawn. A separate dairy & huge barn are also on the property with the potential to be a second living quarters for guests, art studio, cooking or yoga retreat. These dwellings have spectacular original wooden beams which would create a wonderful feature in both spaces once renovated.
